OLPC’s Negroponte Says XO-3 Prototype Tablet Coming in 2022 - brownforsoust77
One Laptop computer Per Child (OLPC) project founder Nicholas Negroponte said that the organization is accelerating its development of the XO-3 tablet computing device and will receive a working prototype by December 2022, ii geezerhood ahead of projections. Negroponte same the final product would price US$75.
"At CES [2011] we will show a tablet that can be and will be used for children plausibly in the developed world," Negroponte same Tuesday during an interview at the MIT Media Lab, the lab he founded. "It will allow us to start testing many of the things that meld a laptop computer, an iPad and a Conflagrate."
"You'll control from us, God willing, an Arm tablet," he aforementioned patc crossing his fingers. "The screen area will probably be a 9-edge in diagonal, possibly more."
Negroponte said that the device might besides let in haptic feedback and "more important than anything else, a dual-mode display." He explained that the device will be fit to follow used both inside and in direct sun. Presumably that would mean that in one way the device uses a backlight and displays information like any traditional laptop, then again in some other mode it switches to a display similar to a Kindle e-reader.
"That's one of the biggest features we penury for our kids," Negroponte aforesaid. "Our kids are alfresco a great deal and sportsmanlike having it backlit just doesn't work for outdoors and just having it reflective doesn't work for dark."
E-ink displays, corresponding those in the Amazon Elicit, Sony Lector and others, have typically been regarded as less stressful on the eyes than backlit displays. The absence of a backlight, though, makes viewing a paginate in a dark room near inconceivable without an additional light.
He said that the prototype bequeath have a screen ready-made of glass, but that an entirely plastic unit is the goal.
"We really want this to be 100 percent constructive, unbreakable and almost extruded out of a machine," he said. A plastic tablet would "plausibly" be shown at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, he said.
Negroponte agreed that Apple's iPad helped tablet PCs gain consumer espousal, but criticized the company's founding as not being open. He aforesaid that the XO-3 tablet is "ultimately an open-source Linux laptop," but that the start ones might run Google's Android operating system. He too aforesaid the XO-3 would receive standard ports.
In the yore OLPC has had trouble hitting its promised toll points, but Negroponte said merchandising the tablet for $75 wouldn't be a problem. Several naysayers might call his end unrealistic, but he welcomes the criticism, saying, "When someone looks at me and tells me I'm representational, I'll realise that I've kind of disoriented it."
